Tips for Troubleshooting a Malfunctioning Air Conditioner

There’s no doubt that a malfunctioning air conditioner is not something you want to deal with at this time of year. Sure, our weather may be cooling down a bit; but as any California resident knows, a heat wave can happen at pretty much any time.

There are a number of potential issues that can affect the operation of your AC system. Fortunately, they are not all total emergencies. We encourage you to do a bit of troubleshooting on your own before calling our team. We’ve shared some more information on this below. Of course, if this has all been checked and you still can’t get your AC to function as it should, then we are standing by and ready to help!

Check Your Thermostat Settings

Particularly true in homes where there are multiple occupants, sometimes the thermostat accidentally gets set to the wrong temperature. Be sure to check and make sure that it’s set at your desired temperature, and that temperature isn’t any more than 20°F cooler than the outside temperature. Also check to be sure that it’s not in heating mode or even “fan only” mode.

Check Your Circuit Breaker

Due to the amount of electricity that your air conditioner goes through when running, it’s probably on its own circuit in your home. Therefore, if it’s not coming on, be sure to check your circuit breaker. Flip the breaker switch to see if your system starts working again. This is actually a common issue near the end of summer, as your air conditioner has been under a lot of stress for the past few months.

Check Your Air Filter

The air filter that comes with your HVAC system is there to protect the system’s interior components. If it becomes too clogged and dirty, it reduces airflow and causes your air conditioner to work too hard. Your air filter should be changed at least every 3 months. If you have significant contaminants inside your home, such as pet dander or cigarette smoke, then this should be done on a monthly basis.
