Last week, we discussed whether or not it was time to replace your air conditioner. Let’s say you’ve made the choice to do so. Don’t assume that you should just get a newer version of what you already have. There are many options out there, and you want to choose the system that’s going to be the best fit for your home. We’ve highlighted some of these options below.
Central AC
Do you already have ductwork installed in your home? Then central AC is likely the best option for you. Central air conditioning allows for whole-home cooling and is much more efficient than using window units or ceiling fans. These provide some cooling effect by themselves, but not enough to really improve your indoor comfort. There are many thermostat options today as well, to help you maintain control over your cooling in order to save money.
Heat Pump
Most homeowners don’t even realize the cooling power that heat pumps have. Heat pumps are actually one of the most useful types of cooling systems there are for our mild summer climate. Similar to a traditional AC system, heat pumps circulate a refrigerant blend between two sets of coils, one inside the house and one outside. This refrigerant absorbs heat from one set of coils and releases it through the other. This process can be reversed in the winter to heat your home, in order to provide you with year-round comfort.
Ductless Cooling
Let’s say you don’t have ductwork. That’s no problem at all! Ductless systems are similar to traditional air conditioners in that they consist of an outdoor unit that pumps refrigerant in. However, as the name implies, they require no ductwork. Additionally, ductless systems are heat pumps, so you get the same year-round comfort from one system. Ductless cooling systems are ideal for small homes that don’t have a lot of room. They are also great for mild climates such as ours.
